I avoid a common bias among many researchers and people towards overweighting economic factors; instead I bring to life who a person is in their environment, what their life is like and how they view the world, flagging their main concerns, explaining their behavior and pointing to what might help them.
On projects I cover the full range of issues (social, economic, health, education, personality, etc.) or focus narrowly on an area guided by a specific question or client interest.
I use clinical and anthropological methods, and structured data as well as interviews, surveys, ethnographic observation and focus groups, depending on the project.
I show insights using structured data (statistical, graphical) and qualitative data—descriptions and case examples that range from a few sentences to book length.

As an academic, I have pushed forward our understanding of wellbeing and human development at the individual and community level.
I have pioneered new methods of research and new answers to what shapes lives and directed pathbreaking studies. I maintain an active research program in East Africa.
